Construction of Chilton Hall was funded in part by a Public Works Administration (PWA) grant, awarded to |

North Texas State Teachers College in 1938. The provisions of the PWA grant funded 45 percent of the construction of Chilton Hall, as a new men's dormitory, and Terrill Hall, as a new women's dormitory. Dr. Rogers: "Students returning to campus in September 1938 found construction underway on both dormitories. The residence for women was named Terrill Hall in honor of former President M. B. Terrill, and the men's residence was called Chilton Hall after the first president, J. C. Chilton." The total cost of construction, equipment, and land acquisition for Terrill Hall was $313,000. Chilton Hall costs were $257,727. (Rogers p287) |
| "The men's dormitory, Chilton Hall, was built on the west side of Avenue C facing east between Chestnut and Prairie Streets. There had been frame houses there serving as cooperative living units. They were moved to a site on Highland Street just across from a college warehouse. A central dining hall was moved on the same block. The boarding houses thus created were used in many cases to house teachers college athletes." (Rogers p288) |
