Abstract: President Barack Obama campaigned on a promise to expand healthcare coverage in the United States to all. This essay examines the political campaign promises, the current mixed structure of the public and private insurance programs in the United States, focusing on children’s healthcare. The paper concludes by examining the options for reform facing the nation: expansion of the private healthcare system, expansion of the public healthcare system, and a novel suggestion for a healthcare program for children that is modeled after the public schools with public tax funding, but with an option to choose a private insurance plan instead if families can afford it.
