Forthcoming publications
I plan to put many of my articles, conference papers, photos, music files, and other research-related documents online in the coming months and years. I support open access to research, especially research that was supported by public funds. My dissertation research on 1990-1 was funded by a U.S. Dept. of Education Fulbright Fellowship. Research in Recife in 2000-1 was funded by a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship. The results of this research should be made freely accessible, and that's what I plan to do.
The Portuguese translation of my doctoral dissertation has been published in 2008 by the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil.
My article "Beyond the Improvisation Class: Learning to Improvise in a University Jazz Studies Program" will be published in IMPROVISATION IN MUSIC -- SOCIETY, EDUCATION, ART. Edited by Gabriel Solis and Bruno Nettl. Urbana: University of Illinois Press. Projected publication date 2009. If you would like to read it now, you can--just drop me an email.
My article on cavalo-marinho will be published in vol. 3 of Music in Latin America and the Caribbean : an encyclopedic history, edited by Malena Kuss (University of Texas Press, forthcoming).
