UNT's Student Money Management Center receives Gold Award

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) has awarded The University of North Texas' Student Money Management Center (SMMC) with a 2007 Gold Excellence Award in one of nine categories.

NASPA, a group of student affairs administrators in higher education, is the leading voice for student affairs administration, policy and practice and affirms the commitment of student affairs to educating the whole student and integrating student life and learning. With over 11,000 members at 1,200 campuses, and representing 29 countries, NASPA is the largest professional association for student affairs administrators, faculty and graduate students.

The SMMC, an outreach program administered by the Division of Student Development, began as a vision of Dr. Bonita Jacobs, UNT's vice president for student development, in 2005. The center provides tools and solutions students need to achieve financial freedom and is dedicated to bringing financial literacy to students.

SMMC Director Paul F. Goebel said, "It is a great privilege to be recognized with this award for the center which has built a reputation of excellence and innovation in teaching students the skills they need to manage money successfully, during and beyond their university experience."

Jacobs will head a presentation team at the national conference in April to showcase the Center's programs and services. A Grand Gold Award will be presented at the conference with the Center competing with the other eight Grand Gold award winning programs.

Jacobs affirmed the recognition of the SMMC. "We are pleased that an organization the size and stature of NASPA has awarded the SMMC their highest program award. The staff in the SMMC have created a program that is most deserving of such high national recognition.  We know of no other student affairs division in the country that offers this kind of comprehensive service to students," she said.
