University percussion ensemble to perform in France
The University of North Texas Percussion Ensemble, made up of 12 students from the world-renowned UNT College of Music, has been invited to perform at the PerKumania Festival hosted by the prestigious Paris Conservatory of Music. "This unique opportunity in France will offer an insight to European percussion instruction and performance practices," said Mark Ford, UNT professor of music and coordinator of the percussion program. "Like UNT, the Paris Conservatory boasts outstanding faculty, such as Frederic Macarez and Eric Sammut. Both recently visited UNT and worked with UNT students and faculty. The Paris Conservatory is interested in continuing this exchange of ideas through this invitation." The Percussion Ensemble will perform at the National School of Music of Alençon and the National School of Music of Le Mans Nov. 19-21 before the performance at the PerKumania Festival at the Paris Conservatory of Music Nov. 21-25. UNT faculty members Mark Ford, Christopher Deane, Ed Soph and Paul Rennick will also perform and present clinics at the festival, which attracts hundreds of professional percussionists from across Europe. UNT students and faculty will participate in master classes and lessons and attend concerts during the trip, and student Dustin Doelling will compete in a snare drum competition at the PerKumania Festival. The UNT percussion program attracts students from across the world to study all types of percussion, including concert snare drum; timpani; drum set; percussion keyboards such as marimba, vibraphone and xylophone; and ethnic percussion, such as African drumming, steel drums, Balinese gamelan; and Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and South Indian percussion.
