UNT honored with Texas Higher Education Star Award
DENTON (UNT), Texas -- For the second year in a row, a University of North Texas program has received the Texas Higher Education Star Award, which recognizes contributions toward achieving the goals of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's Closing the Gaps program. For 2008, UNT's university-wide Enrollment Management program was honored for its efforts to ensure the university is among the leaders in Texas in increasing enrollment and the number of degrees awarded. UNT currently ranks first in the state for the increased number of degrees awarded and second in the state for increased total enrollment. Additionally, UNT has performed at the top in the critical areas of increasing participation and success of African-American, Hispanic and transfer students. Since Closing the Gaps began in 2000, UNT increased enrollment by 26 percent – more than 7,000 students – which accounts for 9 percent of the growth in university enrollment in the state. At the same time, UNT increased the number of degrees awarded by 39 percent. The program also was required to demonstrate its cost effectiveness. In that regard, UNT decreased its administrative cost ratio during this time of dramatic growth. The program, led by Dr. Troy Johnson, UNT's associate vice president for enrollment management, is responsible for recruiting, retaining and graduating a diverse student body that coincides with the university's vision and mission and Closing the Gaps. "The Office of Enrollment Management complements and reflects the efforts of the numerous faculty, staff, and administrators who have been responsible for UNT's commendable success in improving teaching excellence and boosting enrollment and degree completion," said Dr. Wendy K. Wilkins, UNT's provost and vice president for academic affairs. "Since Closing the Gaps began in 2000, UNT has risen to the top of the ranks in Texas for both enrollment growth and the number of degrees awarded." Closing the Gaps is aimed at increasing the number of college graduates in Texas to keep pace with the demands of the economy and ensuring that all qualified Texas students have an opportunity to earn a college degree. One of the critical goals of the program is to have 630,000 more students enrolled in Texas colleges and universities by 2015. "This award is a compliment to the work of many individuals and departments," Johnson said. "Awards like these are earned by all and are shared by all of us." In 2007, UNT's Student Money Management Center was honored with the award.
