Harris honored as public sector's CFO of the Year
DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Andrew Harris, vice president for finance and administration at the University of North Texas, has been honored by the Dallas Business Journal as CFO of the year for public sector companies. Harris was among nine CFOs honored by the Business Journal at its second annual CFO of the Year Awards program. The program recognizes dedicated Dallas-Fort Worth financial professionals. The DBJ also recognized 22 finalists who were nominated for this year's awards program. The recipients in nine categories were chosen by a panel of independent judges that included two past award winners. "This is indeed an honor," said Harris. "This award is a reflection of the work and dedication by everyone on the finance staff at UNT. In these economic times, it's gratifying that the university continues to grow and enhance its reputation as a strong, vibrant institution. As the CFO for the state's fourth-largest university, Harris provides stewardship over a $787 million annual budget for the flagship institution in Denton and a total budget of more than $1 billion for the UNT System. He also serves as vice chancellor for finance for the UNT System, working with Chancellor Lee Jackson and the UNT System Board of Regents. Harris has had significant impact in his first two years at UNT, helping the university expand its operations and programs to keep pace with record enrollment growth. Most importantly, Harris and the finance division have kept UNT financially strong and secure on all fronts during the current tough economic times. Because of its careful management of its vibrant pool of resources, UNT is well poised for continued growth. Under Harris' careful management, UNT's level of debt remains much lower than it is at other universities. Due to its growth and stability, UNT is a Moody's Aa3-rated institution, which is a high-quality rating, the first improvement in 14 years. UNT has withstood the economic downturn without having to freeze hiring or enact layoffs. In fact, the university is planning to add to its work force this fiscal year. Harris carries out his responsibilities while serving as a lieutenant colonel in the Vermont Army National Guard, and he is scheduled to redeploy to Afghanistan in January. Harris has 19 years of commissioned military service and served in active duty in Afghanistan in 2005 and 2006. For his service in Operation Enduring Freedom, he received the Bronze Star, the Combat Action Badge, the Global War on Terror Campaign Medal, and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal.
