Lisa Baronio named Vice President for Advancement, to lead fundraising
DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Lisa Birley Baronio has been named University of North Texas vice president for advancement and director of development of the UNT Foundation. She will join the executive cabinet as leader of the university's fundraising efforts. Baronio, who will join the campus in January 2010, comes to UNT from the University of Connecticut Foundation, where she has served as vice president for development since 2005 and managed all aspects of UConn's Storrs-based academic fundraising operations. As head of UNT's fundraising operations, Baronio is charged with expanding the institution's private support so the university may continue to grow as a national research university that offers a high-quality, affordable higher education to talented students. She will oversee the university's division of advancement and work closely with the UNT Foundation and UNT Alumni Association. "As Texas' fourth-largest university with a nearly 120-year legacy, UNT is a great university with a future that will capitalize on its growing reputation," said President Gretchen M. Bataille. "We have high-quality academics, world-class arts and a growing athletics program. Our research endeavors in disciplines across the spectrum have gained tremendous momentum and in order to continue our progress we need to build strong partnerships with our alumni, community, corporate and other partners. Working closely with UNT's President and other administrative leaders, Baronio will serve a key role in advancing the university toward its strategic goals. "I was very impressed with President Bataille's leadership and it is clear that UNT's dynamic, energetic executive team is well poised for the future," Baronio said. "UNT's recent expansion of faculty and research is noteworthy and while some institution's possible trajectory feels capped, UNT's stature, ranking and philanthropic potential appears boundless. Baronio, who has more than 16 years of experience in higher education fundraising, brings a wealth of leadership experience and personal accomplishment that includes growing the level of giving to individual colleges as well as entire universities. While leading the University of Connecticut fundraising operations, Baronio successfully developed the framework for operations and focused the UConn Foundation staff of development officers to achieve campaign goals in constituent-based development, planned giving and the annual fund. Before joining UConn, Baronio served as associate vice president for development at Wichita State University in Kansas where she developed fundraising priorities for each college and achieved the university's second and third highest to date levels of giving, while also setting three record years in annual fund giving. She also served at the University of Nebraska Foundation as director of corporate relations and foundation relations and helped raise $220 million in corporate and foundation support for Campaign Nebraska. Baronio holds an Executive Master's of Business Administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a B.A. and B.B.A from the University of Iowa.
