Faculty exchange program promotes diversity
DENTON (UNT), Texas --The University of North Texas College of Education begins a faculty exchange program this spring semester with universities in Louisiana and Puerto Rico.
On March 11, a delegation from Ana G. Mendez University, a predominately Hispanic-serving institution in Puerto Rico, will be on the UNT campus.
The Visiting Scholar Program, intended to enhance the UNT educational climate through diverse faculty interaction, began faculty member exchanges this year with Ana G. Mendez University as well as Southern University, a historically African-American institution in Louisiana.
"The interaction resulting from this program will significantly contribute to UNT's study and discussion of multicultural issues," said Dr. James Poirot, associate dean for research and professional development in UNT's College of Education. "We believe the program will improve our educational programs, enhance diversity and expand future UNT research."
Each year, the program will bring three faculty scholars from each of the partner institutions to the UNT campus and will send a like number of UNT faculty scholars to work at the Louisiana and Puerto Rico campuses.
Each scholar involved in the exchange (three from Mendez, three from Southern and six from UNT) is expected to provide four lectures to a graduate level seminar, one lecture that is open to the public, and one lecture to the host university faculty.
Program funds are provided from the UNT Diversity and Multicultural Activities Fund, the ARCO Foundation grant, and the two partner institutions. With continued success, the College of Education plans to expand the program to include the University of Mexico. For more information, contact Poirot at (940) 565-2824.
