UNT receives National Science Foundation grant to help promote health education in minority populations

DENTON (UNT), Texas — According to Texas State Demographer Steve Murdock, if growth in minority populations continues as projected, by the year 2006 the non-Hispanic white population will no longer be the majority in Texas.

Along with this population shift comes the need to address health concerns often reflected in underserved populations. The University of North Texas and the University of North Texas Health Science Center recently received a $965,175 grant from the National Institutes of Health for a health promotion program to respond to this need.

The three-year program, Participation and Training in Health Science (PATHS), will benefit Hispanic and other students by promoting their interest in appropriate education and careers related to health and science.

"The primary goals of Project PATHS are to increase the representation of Hispanics in the health and science professions and promote health-related lifestyle changes," said Dr. Allen Jackson, UNT Regents Professor of the Department of Kinesiology, Health Promotion and Recreation.

Project PATHS coordinators will provide role models, hands-on experiences, mentoring, and field trips to academic institutions with the aim of increasing participating students' knowledge and interests in health and science professions. Students will also engage in personal health promotion and science programs and experiences that will impact their lifestyle behaviors and choices.

"We expect that an outcome of Project Paths will be that more minority students will enter the professions of medicine, nursing, biochemistry, biology, dietetics, kinesiology, health promotion, and physical therapy," Jackson said.

UNT, the UNT Health Science Center, North Dallas High School, and Molina High School of the Dallas Independent School District will form a partnership to complete PATHS. For more information, contact Jackson at (940) 565-3421 or e-mail him at jacksona@unt.edu.
