Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board approves electrical engineering degrees

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board recently approved bachelor's of science and master's of science electrical engineering degree programs at the University of North Texas.

Kal Kallison, director of academic affairs for the Division of Universities and Health-Related Institutions of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, said that UNT's electrical engineering program met the criteria for approval of new degree programs.

"The (electrical engineering) program is well-resourced and have well-credentialed faculty to support the program," he said. "Some of the unique aspects of the program are that it will be project-based and will be enhanced by a grant from the National Science Foundation."

While traditional programs in electrical engineering emphasize standardized teaching and specialty disciplines, UNT's electrical engineering curriculum will combine knowledge about how people think, learn and teach with hands-on industrial projects and a business context.

"The combination of classroom studies and real-world experiences ensures that UNT electrical engineering graduates will be prepared to join the exciting high-tech profession of electrical engineering," said Dr. Murali Varanasi, chair of UNT's Department of Electrical Engineering.

Founding Dean of the College of Engineering Oscar N. Garcia said that this program is the first in a chain of new programs that will be implemented at the college.

UNT's Department of Electrical Engineering plans to offer the following three specially designed courses for incoming students in the spring semester:

  • Project I – Learning-to-Learn: Provides students techniques to improve learning outcomes and make lifelong learning habitual.

  • Project II – Ethics and Professionalism: Exposes students to ethical issues that arise in the engineering profession and encourages habits of professional responsibility and conduct.

  • Introduction to Circuits, Computer Aided Design and Instrumentation: Provides students with fundamental concepts of electrical circuits.
