Prize-winning author to read from her short stories
DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Rebecca Meacham, winner of the 2004 Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Short Fiction from the University of North Texas Press, plans to entertain a crowd at UNT with a reading and an informal question and answer session. At 8 p.m. Jan. 27 (Thursday), Meacham will read from her work in the Golden Eagle Suite in the University Union. The union is located one block west of Welch and West Prairie streets. The informal question and answer session will occur earlier in the day at 4 p.m. in Room 212 of the Auditorium Building, located on West Hickory between avenues A and B. Meacham will be reading an excerpt from Let's Do, a collection of nine short stories published in Dec. 2004 by the UNT Press. Besides receiving the 2004 Katherine Anne Porter Award, Let's Do was also selected by Barnes and Noble for its Discover Great New Writers Program. "Rebecca Meacham has one of the freshest voices I've encountered in a long time," said Jonis Agee, an acclaimed author of novels, short stories and books of poetry. She said Meacham's stories are "deliciously subversive, brave and outrageous." The stories in Let's Do include a variety of dark and funny Midwestern characters, including a 12-year-old anorexic girl, a 72-year-old retired vacuum cleaner repairman and widower and a lawyer who is giving up on life. Meacham, an assistant professor in English, women's studies and humanistic studies at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, earned a bachelor's degree in American studies at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1992. She earned her master's degree in fiction writing from Bowling Green State University in 1994 and a doctorate in English from the University of Cincinnati in 2002. Meacham has published numerous articles for various journals on topics such as teaching and black literature, as well as on writers and culture in anthologies and encyclopedias. Meacham also received two previous awards for short fiction, including the Indiana Review Fiction Prize and the Chelsea Award for Short Fiction.
