Partnership establishes steel testing lab
DENTON (UNT), Texas - The University of North Texas College of Engineering and NUCONSTEEL™, a Nucor Company, have signed a unique partnership agreement that will enable the establishment of a light gauge steel testing laboratory in UNT's Department of Engineering Technology. The laboratory will be partially equipped and staffed with the help of funding from NUCONSTEEL. According to Dr. Oscar Garcia, founding dean of the UNT College of Engineering, the agreement has the potential to be the basis of a long and mutually beneficial relationship for both parties. "The work we do as a result of this agreement will go a long way to stimulate construction engineering studies at UNT," Garcia said. NUCONSTEEL, headquartered in Denton, is a designer and manufacturer of load bearing light gauge steel framing systems for commercial and residential construction across the U.S. Its parent company, Nucor Corporation, is America's largest steel producer and a Fortune 500 corporation. Nucor also is the nation's largest recycler. In signing the agreement, Donald R. Moody, NUCONSTEEL's general manager, noted that he was very pleased with the new relationship with UNT's College of Engineering and is anxious to get started. "This partnership will enable us to concentrate our ongoing structural testing efforts in one well equipped and managed facility, located close to our headquarters, which we expect will result in accelerated product development and improvement cycles," he said. According to the terms of the agreement, the Engineering Technology Department has agreed to commit a professor to supervise the laboratory. And after a nationwide search that concluded in January, UNT selected Dr. Cheng Yu, an assistant professor of construction engineering technology and a recent graduate of the Johns Hopkins University, for the post. During the school year, Yu will devote half of his time in the laboratory to research and half of his time to teaching. He will devote full time to the laboratory during the summer. NUCONSTEEL is the second commercial enterprise to form a partnership with UNT. Last November, NanoHoldings LLC signed an exclusive license agreement with the university to jointly form NanoStar, Inc. to commercialize patent-pending, UNT-developed nanotechnology focusing on energy storage and release.
