Engineering makes transfer easier for Richland College students

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- With the goal of broadening the recruitment base of engineering students at the University of North Texas, UNT will enter a new agreement with Richland College of the Dallas County Community Colleges (DCCC).

Although UNT and the DCCC as a whole signed an agreement a year ago to transfer students from DCCC to UNT's College of Engineering, the new pact will be more specific.

"The Richland one is more strategic," said Chris Heiden, academic counselor in UNT's College of Engineering. "The agreement will help transfer students directly from Richland College into UNT's computer and electrical engineering programs."

Heiden said the new agreement should draw more engineering students to UNT from Richland College and the Dallas area. Richland College is located at 12800 Abrams Road in Dallas.

Brent Donham, dean of the school of engineering and technology at Richland College, was instrumental in forming this new arrangement. He said the agreement will alleviate some of the woes experienced by engineering students attending community college. For instance, students will know that their engineering course work will transfer to UNT. What's more, the student will transfer with a block of completed engineering courses.

Typically, students transferring from a community college to an engineering program at a four-year institution have not had the opportunity to enroll in many engineering courses, Donham said. However, due to Richland College's specialization in engineering, students can begin building a store of engineering knowledge before they even reach UNT.

Administrators from Richland College and UNT will sign the articulation agreement at 9 a.m. April 20 (Wednesday) at the dean's conference room at UNT's Research Park Facility, located at 3940 North Elm Street in Denton.
