Student development snags national award

DENTON (UNT), Texas - The University of North Texas Division of Student Development has been awarded the first-ever Ted K. Miller Achievement of Excellence in Assessment Award, given by the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) to commemorate the organization's 25th anniversary.

The national award recognizes the work of the Assessment Team in the Division of Student Development to promote parts of planning and assessment of programs and services over a five-year period. The team is chaired Dr. Jan Hillman, UNT executive director of planning and student development.

Hillman and Dr. Bonita Jacobs, UNT vice president for student development, accepted the award on behalf of the university during a CAS meeting April 18 (Monday) in Washington, D.C.

"CAS standards are an integral part of our assessment programs, and we are highly honored to be singled out to receive this award," Jacobs said.

CAS has been the pre-eminent force for promoting standards in student affairs, student services and student development programs since its inception in 1979. CAS creates the Book of Professional Standards and Guidelines and Self-Assessment Guides to lead to quality-controlled programs and services.

CAS is made up of 37 member organizations, comprising more than 100,000 professionals. Two of the largest member associations are the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) and the American College Personnel Association (ACPA).
