National Science Foundation bestows grant for new mechanical engineering program

DENTON (UNT), Texas — The University of North Texas is taking another big step in engineering education.

Dr. Oscar Garcia, UNT's founding dean of the College of Engineering, announced the receipt of a $99,954 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to plan for a new innovative baccalaureate-level interdisciplinary program in Mechanical and Energy Engineering (MEE).

Garcia says with this NSF grant, UNT's engineering college will be poised to improve the way mechanical and energy engineering — a unique program combining the principals of mechanical engineering and energy engineering — is taught.

Reza Mirshams, UNT's associate engineering dean and project director for the grant agrees.

"With funding from the NSF, we can develop an innovative interdisciplinary curriculum for mechanical and energy engineers to equip them for lifelong learning and successful career building," he said.

Mirshams said the program will be built on a system-level approach to ME-based design, on core fundamentals of undergraduate-level mechanical and energy engineering .

He said the grant will facilitate the development of an innovative curriculum to be built on traditional fundamentals of mechanical and energy engineering. The curriculum will also provide experiential-oriented approaches, he added.

"We will offer cross-cutting education through the academic disciplines of mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, electrical engineering and computer science and engineering," Mirshams said.

"Once the curriculum is in place, UNT's College of Engineering will offer students an innovative undergraduate curriculum in mechanical engineering with an emphasis on energy engineering," Mirshams said.

Mirshams says graduates of such a program will have experience to address industrial challenges, work in interdisciplinary teams and use cognitive learning experiences.

UNT's College of Engineering is launching a national search for a department chair of this new program and department. UNT's College of Engineering search announcement and the grant proposal can be found at www.eng.unt.edu.
