OVERVIEW
This is the Automated External Defibrillator Information and Resource Center (AEDIRC) at the University of North Texas, in the Risk Management Services Department.
This website covers the Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation and Public Access Defibrillator Programs; will offer online forms to register AED and CPR seminars and courses; information on purchasing AED's and AED Trainers; industry and university links; contact information; and anything else pertaining to AED's and CPR.
Thank you for visiting!
PROGRAMS
Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Program
GOAL: To train members of the faculty and staff at UNT in CPR and First Aid
Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) Program
A campus-wide initiative to strategically locate Automated External Defibrillators (AED) for use by the public at large
Tommy Jones, Safety Services Officer
Mr. Jones is employed by the University of North Texas, Risk Management & Emergency Services as the Safety Services Officer. He is a certified fire fighter, emergency medical technician, and is in charge of the campus's Public Access Defibrillator Program, as well as the Lock Out/Tag out, Confined Space, and Hot Work Permit Programs. Mr. Jones also teaches classes for the faculty, staff and students in CPR, AED, and First Aid certification.
Tommy Jones can be reached either at (940) 369-8104, or emailed at jonest@adaf.admin.unt.edu
TRAINING & CERTIFICATION
Risk Management Services at the University of North Texas offers training in Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use; Infant, Child, and Adult CPR; and basic first aid to anyone interested in training and certification in these areas.
Automated External Defibrillators (AED) improve survival after an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Their presence reduces the critical time for treatment. Less time to defibrillation improves a victims chances of survival. Having the devices appropriately located in a business or workplace improves the survivability of people experiencing a cardiac crisis.
Early CPR increases a persons chance of survival after a cardiac arrest. Prompt and quality administering of CPR methods can help ensure the survival of an individual suffering from a heart stoppage.
Basic First Aid training is effective in preventing further injuries and providing basic care to an individual sustaining life-threatening injuries such as profuse bleeding, wounds, cuts, breathing difficulties, poisoning, bone-related injuries, and environmental emergencies.
Online training demonstration available
Power Heart, who beginning June 2007 became our equipment provider of AED's on campus, provides online demonstrations and videos from their website located at
Important Considerations for Utilizing Online Training and Demonstration
If you would like training on all AED equipment (including Medtronic units currently available on campus, which operate slightly differently than Power Heart AED's), please contact (940) 369-8104 or check below for information on AED classes.
Please note that, although they provide our equipment, the status and/or quality of the online information, demonstrations, and videos available through their website cannot be guaranteed to be accurate. Please use at your own risk.
If you have any questions or concerns, or would like to schedule an AED training course, please contact (940) 369-8104. The University of North Texas cannot be held liable for any information found on external links.

PAD PROGRAM
The University Of North Texas recognizes there is a potential for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) to faculty, staff, students, and visitors on the University Of North Texas campus. SCA can happen anywhere, anytime. SCA is usually caused by an electrical malfunction that makes the heart quiver ineffectively. CPR is not enough. It is a temporary measure that helps maintain blood flow to the brain. A lifesaving pulse of electricity, defibrillation, is the only treatment and must be delivered quickly to restore the heart's normal rhythm. Because every minute counts when SCA strikes, the University Of North Texas is placing automated external defibrillators (AED's) in key locations around the campus. These AED's can be used by anyone with proper training.
An AED is used to treat victims who experience SCA. It is only to be applied to victims who are unconscious, not breathing, and show no signs of circulation such as normal breathing, coughing and movement. The AED will analyze the heart rhythm and advise the operator if a shockable rhythm is detected. If a shockable rhythm is detected, the AED will charge to the appropriate energy level and advise the operator a shock is being delivered.
