Social Workers tackle the "fit" between people and their surrounding environments. We often help people gain skills and make changes that will improve their lives, but we don't stop there. We also bring about changes in society at large, so that everyone has true access to the opportunities that surround us.

With this degree, you can become a licensed social worker and qualify for advanced standing in graduate school. Students can "double major" in social work and gerontology.

Description

The field of Social Work helps ensure that people have equal access to resources, services and opportunities. Social Workers encourage change by striving to end discrimination, oppression, poverty and other forms of social injustice. Working through established social groups and organizations, Social Workers strive to make them more responsive and helpful to the individuals they serve.

The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree at UNT consists of 124 college credit hours including 39 hours in the major, 16 hours of pre-major courses, 37 hours of general academics and 32 hours of general electives. The program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

Any questions concerning the Social Work Program at UNT should be directed to Program Director Dr. Tom Barton . Click on the link to access his contact information, a short bio and his vitae.

Bachelor of Social Work (BSW Degree)

Admission to the Social Work Program is based on formal application to the program. To foster success in the program a "cohort" system is used. Each "cohort" is designed for a limited number of students necessitating restricted enrollment in some semesters. Only the highest ranking candidates are admitted into the program, so it is important to follow the application procedure precisely as outlined in the Social Work Student Handbook.

Title IV-E Program

The Social Work Program holds a grant to train and educate students for careers in the Texas Department of Family & Protective Services (TDFPS). The program offers students a $5,500 stipend in their last semester. The stipend requires only that a student work for a TDFPS agency for eight (8) months upon graduation.

Those students interested in pursuing a career with the Texas Department of Family & Protective Services should indicate such on their admissions form and discuss it with their advisor before their first semester in the program.

This component of the Social Work Program is administered by Ms. Anna Rae Rozell and all questions should be referred to her. Click the link above to access her contact information.

Licensing

The BSW prepares students for entry-level positions in a variety of settings, and helps to prepare them for the state licensing exam required of all social workers in the State of Texas. All questions regarding licensing should be directed to the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners in the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Admissions

Admissions to the Social Work Program is competitive and comprehensive. Students must complete 16 hours of pre-major course work before making a formal application to the program. Students must also be able to articulate, in writing, an understanding of the profession and the role of the social worker in society.

Application forms, course scheduling guidelines, degree planning sheets and a checklist needed to successfully all documents for admission into the Social Work Program are included in the Social Work Student Handbook.

Careers

A wide variety of career opportunities are available for social workers. It is not unusual to find social workers in public sector agencies like child and family services, state/federal rehabilitation programs, city governments, and schools. But, did you know that social workers are also in demand in the private sector? Private facilities for the treatment of addictions, private hospitals and insurance companies to name just a few. More private sector companies are recognizing the contribution social workers make to workplaces that value diversity, and are familiar with behavior and policy analysis.
