• Dr. Mariela Nunez-Janes awarded Outstanding Service Award at Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program's 17th Annual Recognition Luncheon and Research Poster Presentation.
Each year, the McNair Scholars present the Outstanding Service Award to an individual in the university community who willingly and graciously supports and promotes the McNair program.
A faculty member at UNT since 2003, McNair advisory board member Dr. Mariela Nunez-Janes has mentored or co-mentored five McNair Scholars. Two of the mentees are currently in graduate school and the other three are still undergraduates.
She is passionate about exposure to education for children of all ages and promoting educational equity.The McNair scholars are grateful to her for her commitment and guidance.

Steve is a world famous animal trainer; having worked with dozens of species of animals. Steve developed the first of its kind, free flight bird show, and since then has produced educational animal programs for, and consulted at, over 70 zoological facilities around the world.
Steve is President of both Natural Encounters, Inc., a company of over 20 professional animal trainers, and Natural Encounters Conservation Fund, Inc., a company dedicated to raising money for conservation projects. • The Department of Anthropology is pleased to announce another successful year for the National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (NSF REU). The NSF REU is a 10 week, intensive summer research program that prepares undergraduate students for graduate level education by training and empowering them to conduct their own individual research under the guidance of a faculty mentor. This year, 10 undergraduate students attended the program and completed projects, which varied in topic and research methodologies.

• UNT Master Students to Present Vision for Downtown Prosper Graduate students and their faculty leader, Dr. Sudha Arlikatti, from the Department of Public Administration at the University of North Texas will be reporting to the Prosper Town Council their vision of Downtown Prosper this Thursday night, May 14, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. After making multiple visits to the town to collect data from Town residents and businesses, the city staff, members of the Town Council, and collecting over 250 responses from an online Citizen Survey, the student will be presenting four conceptual designs and economic development recommendations for the Downtown area.

• Dallas Police Department Officer Graham Quattlebaum, a Criminal Justice alum, was recently featured in the Dallas Morning News in a glowing article illustrating how he saved the life of a suicidal man who had also threatened others. Quattlebaum is praised by his superiors for having the right attitude in his work, being able to take charge of a stressful situation while able to adapt to it. This is a nice article about the 4 year veteran.

• Undergraduate Anthropology major and McNair Scholar Lee Stephens presented a poster on her work with a tribe of American Indians in south Texas at the 2009 annual meeting of the Society for Applied Anthropology in Santa Fe, New Mexico and won first place in the student poster competition, beating out many graduate students. Her poster is now hanging in the Anthropology Department. Her poster represented her work with the Piro/Manso/Tiwa tribe last summer organizing their historical materials to assist them in gaining recognition as a federally recognized Indian tribe.

The Behavior Analysis Student and Alumni Association are hosting a colloquium with Dr. David Palmer, from Smith College in Northampton, MA, to be held Friday, Feb. 13 from 4-6pm in EESAT 110. Dr. Palmer is a noted behavior analyst whose work has been highly influential in our understanding of complex human behavior. His talk for our colloquium is entitled "The Interpretation of Human Behavior: Multiple Causation and the Concept of the Repertoire."

Lauren Johnson, Sociology, and Valerie Gallardo, Public Administration, have been selected for the American Humanics NextGen Leaders program. Each will each receive a $4,500 stipend to intern with a nonprofit organization this spring. Since the program's inception in summer 2007, seven UNT students have received this scholarship.
According to the American Humanics website, "Between spring 2007 and 2012, American Humanics plans to select 1,000 NextGen Leaders who will successfully complete their AH certification requirements and graduate to professional positions in the nonprofit sector. Nonprofit organizations that host a NextGen Leader will gain access to, and benefit from, the services of talented and committed American Humanics students preparing to enter the workforce as nonprofit professionals. A goal of NextGen is to illustrate the positive effect of competitive internship stipends and scholarships on the recruitment and retention of skilled and diverse next generation nonprofit leaders. The NextGen Leaders program is made possible through a generous $5 million grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation."
