Related Field Exam in Musicology for DMA Students
- 1. The first part of the exam will consist of six score excerpts from before 1750. Students must write on four of the excerpts, addressing matters of style, genre, and period, and suggesting possible composers. The excerpts will be taken from pieces in the style and genre of those represented in the first volume of the Grout anthology, but not from the actual pieces excerpted in the anthology. (45 minutes)
- 2. The second part of the exam will consist of three questions having to do with musicology as a field and will therefore come out of topics studied in MUMH 5020 (Introduction to Musicology). Students must write short essays on two of the three questions. (45 minutes)
- 3. The third part of the exam will consist of three questions requiring students to write longer essays on questions focused on repertory that will be assigned ahead of time. Students must choose two of the three questions.
Well in advance of the exam, the student's related field advisor will assign her/him a group of six pieces (of diverse genres), one from each of the six style periods: Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and twentieth/twenty-first centuries. To this group of six pieces, the student will add three pieces of his/her choice, subject to the related-field professor's approval. Students should prepare for this part of the exam by acquiring a thorough knowledge of the nine selected pieces and the literature on them. (1 1/2 hours)
